blues bass lines licks
What kind of jazz is this?

What kind of jazz pianists play “light jazz”. I mean the kind of jazz piano that is accompanied by a bass line played by a walking bass? The kind that has a lot of blues licks?

Another question: what kind of jazz is the jazz that comes on before the “Everybody Loves Raymond” tv. show?

Ahhh OMG I love answering questions like these because I listen mostly to piano trio jazz. I might not call it “light” because when you really listen to these, it reaches into the depths of your soul. Some of these recordings changed my life.

The two that I always recommend are :

Oscar Peterson Trio (Ray Brown, bass; Ed Thigpen, drums)
on “We Get Requests.” You absolutely MUST get this one.

Ray Brown Trio (Gene Harris, piano; Jeff Hamilton, drums)
on “Live at the Loa–Summer Wind.”

If you like the bluesy piano licks, you will LOVE Gene Harris!! Also check out “Soular Energy” by the Ray Brown Trio with Gene Harris.

Those are my top picks but pretty much anything by the Ray Brown Trio (with Gene Harris, Benny Green, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, or any other pianist who has been in a group of his) is bound to be awesome.

I’d say start with these selections above and then later, check out “This One’s For Blanton” by Duke Ellington and Ray Brown. When you get really used to listening and appreciating piano/bass music, this CD will be a blessing. But start out with the other ones first.

Seriously, get these CDs. Especially “We Get Requests” and “Summer Wind.”

Sorry but I don’t watch Everybody Loves Raymond… if I knew that answer I would tell you.

But really, you need to get these CDs.
